George R.R. Martin Developing '10,000 Ships' Spin-Off Series with Pulitzer Prize Winner Eboni Booth (2024)

Remember how we recently reported that legendary writer Brian Helgeland pitched a Game of Thrones spin-off series to HBO, which was tentatively titled 10,000 Ships, and was supposed to be focused on Queen Nymeria, the warrior-queen of the Rhoynar? The idea was, as you might remember, rejected by HBO at the time, and based on everything, we criticized that as a bad move. Well… it seems now that it wasn’t the idea that was an issue but rather Helgeland, as George R.R. Martin himself confirmed that he is currently working on the pilot for a Game of Thrones spin-off series titled… you guessed it… 10,000 Ships!

This comes off as a rather strange piece of news, seeing what was revealed last month, but it seems that Queen Nymeria’s story will be ultimately presented to the fans, although we have yet to see how, as it obviously won’t be Helegeland’s original idea.

This news was confirmed by Martin himself on his blog, as the author congratulated Eboni Booth for winning the Pulitzer Prize, and confirmed that she would be working with him on the spin-off:

Never having won a Pulitzer Prize myself, I am at a loss to explain why the medal shows Ben Franklin rather than Joseph Pulitzer, but Eboni has promised to fill me in after the ceremony. She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.

As you can see, we don’t know much about the planned project at this point, save that it is going to be about Nymeria and that Martin is planning on bringing the complete lore to the screen, but that is it. In case you’ve forgotten, Helgeland initially described his pitch as follows:

It came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original. That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead. My script was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia. Essentially, it was the story of Moses but swapping him out for Nymeria. Her country gets ruined and her people are forced to live on the water, which is why the show was called10,000 Ships. They end up having to leave and find a new home like the Israelites leaving Egypt. She’s leading all these people, trying to hold everyone together but things are always in danger of falling apart as they travel around a fictionalized version of the Mediterranean, looking for a new home to settle in. Martin and Booth probably won’t be borrowing much from this pitch, but we’ll have to wait and see how it all turns out. That is why you should keep following us for all the updates!
