Vernacular architecture represents a great resource that has considerable potential to define principles for sustainable design and contemporary architecture. This publication is the result of an overall aim to produce a valuable tool for analysis regarding vernacular heritage through different assessments, in order to define principles to consider for sustainable development. From Vernacular to World Heritage

This publication brings together the results of the project 3DPAST: Living and virtual visiting European World Heritage, co-funded by the Creative Europe EU programme. The research highlighted the exceptional character and quality of living in vernacular dwellings found in World Heritage sites. This was possible by seizing the cultural space of European vernacular heritage, located in Pico island (Portugal), Cuenca town (Spain), Pienza (Italy), Old Rauma (Finland), Transylvania (Romania), Berat & Gjirokastra (Albania), Pátmos (Greece), and Upper Svaneti (Georgia). New digital realities grant the possibility to visit and to appreciate those places, to non-travelling audiences, who lack the opportunity to experience this unique heritage in situ. Creative potential is highlighted in 3D models and digital visualisations, which associate outstanding local knowledge with the vernacular expression of World Heritage.

La realizzazione di modelli 3D reality based del patrimonio culturale tangibile è una pratica sempre più diffusa, resa solo in apparenza banale grazie agli odierni sistemi di acquisizione dei dati. In particolare l’utilizzo delle tecniche structure from motion a partire da fotogrammi scattati sia da terra che con drone mediante fotocamere commerciali ha consentito anche ai non esperti del settore del rilievo digitale di cimentarsi nelle operazioni di digitalizzazione (o virtualizzazione) dell’esistente. La realizzazione dei cosiddetti Digital Twin, in realtà, comporta la messa a punto di workflow di lavoro in genere complessi, la padronanza di strumenti sia in fase di acquisizione dei dati (sensori attivi, quali i laser scanner, e sensori passivi) che di gestione (software per la gestione delle pointcloud e per la fotogrammetria digitale) e restituzione degli stessi (software per l’editing dei modelli tridimensionali e la rappresentazione bidimensionale) e una conoscenza approfondita degli oggetti da documentare al fine di realizzare elaborati 2D e 3D che consentono, di caso in caso, di fare opportunamente emergere i caratteri morfometrici e cromatici dei beni oggetto di studio. Il rilievo è, pertanto, un’operazione critica nella quale la componente tecnica e quella umanistica devono essere bilanciate tra loro per ottenere dei risultati corretti e, soprattutto, utili, ovvero in grado di soddisfare il fine per cui sono state avviate le operazioni di rilevamento.

Creation of a New Vernacular Architecture and the Attainment of Sustainability: The Case of Akyaka Town Development

This study problematizes a case where the interpretation of local architectural types by a designer forms a new vernacular architecture that shapes the sphere of a newly developing small town towards one that became sustainable. The house built by Nail Cakirhan for himself in Akyaka (Turkey) opens up a new future in front of the small village of then, towards becoming a touristic center with a specific architectural language of its own. Cakirhan designs his house by interpreting the traditional houses of his hometown, Ula, which is only a few kilometers away from the village of Akyaka. The design of the house initiates the formation of a unique architectural language for Akyaka, which gradually evolves into a new vernacular architecture. Since then, this invented architectural tradition has both transformed the village into a popular touristic town and also initiated a sustainable approach due to its sensitivity for the cultural and natural assets of the context. This architectural language is protected by the master development plan now, and the town is declared as a ‘slow-city’ due to its culturally and environmentally sensitive character. In order to portray this development, this study will first examine Cakirhan’s house in relation to its referential and actual contexts, then it will observe the development of the town of Akyaka by means of looking at Cakirhan architecture in Akyaka, the master development plan of Akyaka that protects the architectural language, and the development of the town as a sustainable, slow-city. The portrayal of the architectural development of Akyaka could demonstrate how a fairly recent architectural practice can today result in the development of a sustainable and harmonious architectural environment.

A collaborative Web App to foster a knowledge network on vernacular her-itage, craftspeople, and sustainability

Vernacular architecture provides extraordinary technological and typological solutions, which are the result of a complex system of knowledge that has evolved through trial and error, in a deep connection to the environmental, social, economic and cultural contexts. The goal of the study presented here is to propose a tool able to organise vernacular knowledge, both tangible and intangible, by systematising principles, strategies, design models and solutions in order to be more easily shared, transmitted and employed in the design of new sustainable architecture. The tool, which is developed as part of the project "VerSus+ / Heritage for People" (Creative Europe Program), is a collaborative Web Application able to map solutions and models from vernacular architecture, and to associate and classify them with sustainable strategies.
