Whisper of the Worm is an exotic sniper rifle that can be obtained by completing the mission "The Whisper" on Io. Originally introduced in July 2018, the weapon and its corresponding quest was vaulted when Season of Arrivals ended in November 2020 (since Io itself was removed from the game). Since then, the weapon had been obtainable in the Monument To Lost Lights. A brand-new version, however, was introduced to Destiny 2 as part of the April 2024 Into the Light content update.

How to Get Whisper of the Worm

To acquire Whisper of the Worm, you'll have to visit Eris Morn on the Moon to begin the Whispers of the Past quest. It mainly involves starting an exotic mission called The Whisper from the Into the Light section of the Destinations menu.

Follow our dedicated walkthrough to complete The Whisper.

Whisper of the Worm (Original)

  • White Nail: Higher base precision damage. Rapidly landing three precision hits will refill the magazine.
  • Fitted Stock: The weapon is stable but heavy. Stability is increased, moderately controls recoil, and slightly decreases handling speed.
  • Mulligan: Missing a shot has a chance to return ammo directly to the magazine.
  • Armor-Piercing Rounds: Rounds cause extra damage to combatants' shields and overpenetrate targets. Slightly increases range.
  • Polygonal Rifling: Barrel optimized for recoil reduction. Increases stability.

Whisper of the Worm (Into the Light)

The key difference with the new Whisper of the Worm is that as soon as you acquire it, you can extract the crafting pattern and then craft your own at the Enclave on Mars. The White Nail exotic trait is fixed (but upgradable), and every other slot on the weapon can be selected.

  • White Nail (Exotic Trait): Higher base precision damage. Rapidly landing three precision hits will refill the magazine.
  • Barrel: Polygonal Barrel (Default), Arrowhead Break, Corkscrew Rifling, Chambered Compensator, Smallbore, Full Bore, Extended Barrel, Fluted Barrel, Hammer-Forged Rifling
  • Magazine: Accurized Rounds (Default), Flared Magwell, Alloy Magazine, Steady Rounds
  • Stock: Fitted Stock (Default), Short-Action Stock, Composite Stock, Hand-Laid Stock
  • Possible Third Column Rolls:
    • Mulligan: Missing a shot has a chance to return ammo directly to the magazine.
    • Field Prep: Increased ammo reserves. Faster reload, stow, and ready speed when you're crouching
    • No Distractions: Aiming this weapon for a short period reduces flinch.
    • Enlightened Action: Dealing damage improves reload speed and handling.
  • Whispered Breathing (Catalyst) - Aiming this weapon without firing for a brief moment grants bonus range and precision damage while it remains zoomed.

To upgrade the Intrinsic trait White Nail, players have to find and destroy a series of Oracles hidden within The Whisper that ostensibly replace secret chests. Be sure to reference our The Whisper guide to find each one.

Magazine, Barrel, and Stock options require an "intrinsic upgrade" in the crafting menu. Completing The Whisper again on Normal or Legendary will grant one intrinsic upgrade, so you must replay the mission many times.

You'll have to complete a weekly series of quests called Whispers of the Taken for the core perks, but each of these involves completing the mission yet again anyway, so you'll also get those intrinsic upgrades from doing that.
