Whisper of the Worm had a stellar Exotic quest that was removed from the game. Three years later, the fan-favorite quest, The Whisper, is finally back as part of Into the Light.
Plus, Whisper of the Worm will return to us a craftable weapon. Today, we cover how powerful this revamped Exotic Sniper rifle is and tell you how to get both the weapon and catalyst.

How to get Whisper of the Worm?

Whisper of the Worm is now craftable
You can obtain the craftable version of Whisper of the Worm for free by completing The Whisper Exotic mission. Unlocking new perks will require subsequent clears. As explained by Bungie:
- First completion of the mission on Normal or Legendary difficulty will award the Exotic Deepsight weapon associated with the mission. Extracting or dismantling this Deepsight weapon will grant the pattern.
- Each completion of the Normal or Legendary version of the Exotic mission will award an intrinsic upgrade that can be used when crafting the Exotic weapon.

How good is the “new” Whisper of the Worm?
Whisper of the Worm features the following Exotic perks:
- White Nail: Higher base precision damage. Rapidly landing three precision hits will refill the magazine.
- Mulligan: Missing a shot has a chance to return ammo directly to the magazine.
Whisper of the Worm boasts incredibly high total damage and competitive numbers across the board, making it a very easy-to-use (with Divinity) DPS weapon that does not require any rotations or strategies to succeed.
While Leviathan’s Breath may be the weapon’s main competitor, Whisper of the Worm has the potential to surpass it. With the introduction of upcoming craftable options, Whisper of the Worm is poised to become the go-to total damage option for longer-lasting damage phases. This potential meta-shift should excite players looking for a new, powerful weapon during Into The Light and The Final Shape.
The main area where Whisper of the Worm falls short is in the DPS department. Due to it being quite slow to fire, Whisper’s damage per second is relatively low and grossly outclassed by other options, such as Grenade Launchers or Rockets, meaning that for any DPS phase that doesn’t last long enough, Whisper will be a poor pick. On top of this, it’s rare that damage phases last long enough to get all your ammo out, as most phases simply do not last long enough. However, if there is an encounter with an extremely long damage phase, such as Rhulk, Whisper will be a very viable pick when paired with Divinity.
All in all, we consider Whisper of the Worm A-tier for PvE and C-tier for PvP.
Whisper of the Worm PvE God rolls
- Barrel: Hand-Laid Stock
- Magazine: Flared Magwell
- Perk: Field Prep or No Distractions
- Stock: Short-Action Stock
Handling and Stability will massively benefit Whisper of the Worm, as it can be pretty clunky to use and demands constant precision, making Fluted Barrel, Short-Action Stock, and Flared Magwell the best picks for your barrel and magazine.
Field Prep and No Distractions are the best picks for your perk slot. Field Prep will boost Whisper’s total reserves even higher, making its total damage even more insane. Alternatively, No Distractions provides flinch resistance, which can be invaluable in avoiding getting massively flinched off target.
Whisper of the Worm PvP God rolls
- Barrel: Fluted Barrel
- Magazine: Accurised Rounds
- Perk: Mulligan or No Distractions
- Stock: Short-Action Stock
Stability and Handling are both very important to Snipers in order to make them feel nicer to use. This is exacerbated on Whisper as it is rather clunky; therefore, Fluted Barrel should be your choice for the barrel, and Short-Action Stock is good for your stock.
For your perk, Mulligan or No Distractions are the best choices, as Mulligan has a 20% chance to refund a missed bullet, but No Distractions provides a healthy flinch bonus after aiming down sights for a short time.
